Did the Ancients Really Believe the World Is Flat?

Posted By on February 5, 2011

The mind has lost its cutting edge, we hardly understand the Ancients. — Grégoire de Tours, AD 500s [Hamlet’s Mill, pg 10]

The lazy word “evolution” had blinded us to the real complexities of the past. — authors of Hamlet’s Mill, pg 69.

Over at Untwist History, we discuss the “vulgar error” that Columbus finally enlightened Medieval man that the world is round. [See Feb 2011 archives] Here at TCFB, we address the following question: Didn’t the earlier civilizations believe the Earth was flat, surrounded by water, sitting on pillars (or a turtle) and covered with a dome? (Or variations thereof)

John Byl, Ph.D. in astronomy, notes at his bylogos blog that such a diagram is:

more a reflection of the ignorance of modern scholars than of ancient civilization. Ancient man was a much keener observer of the night sky than modern desk-bound scholars. They were well aware that the stellar sky rotates daily. Hence it cannot be a solid hemisphere held up by pillars fixed on the earth. Further, they were well aware of months and seasons. Hence the sun and moon were not fixed in a stellar shell. They were also well aware that the sun and moon were much more distant than flying birds. [See Dr. Byl’s interesting post on this subject at bylogos.blogspot.com in “Genesis and Ancient Cosmology”]

Men of all sorts, times, and places have never ceased to descend into all manner of ignorant and/or idolatrous ideas. However, in general, the flat-Earth myth is one that serves the minds of evolutionists who demand that ancients be unevolved and moderns be much more highly evolved. The issue of earliest man’s intelligence and knowledge of the Cosmos was something we tackled head-on in our 1994 work They Came From Babel.

We found that an ever-growing number of scholars, biblical and evolutionist alike, continue to demonstrate the impressive knowledge and abilities of those ancients who designed and built the Great Pyramid, Stonehenge, and a host of other megalithic, astronomically sophisticated sites found around the globe. The expanding file of evidence has caused not a few evolutionist-minded researchers to reorder their thinking, some quite radically. The discipline of archaeoastronomy has grown from the 1890s observations of British astronomer Sir Joseph Norman Lockyer, who detected complex astronomical alignments in ancient archaeological sites.

Egypt is one of the oldest of civilizations and the Great Pyramid one of man’s oldest artifacts. In TCFB, we presented evidence that the Great Pyramid is (among other things) a “sophisticated reference map of the Earth’s Northern Hemisphere” using spherical projection. Egypt’s mathematical system came from an even older Babylonia. They had an accurate figure for the circumference of the Earth. How could any of that possibly reflect any belief in a flat Earth?

As for mythologies and cosmologies, in Hamlet’s Mill (1969), Professors Giorgio de Santillana and Hertha von Dechend demonstrated that the roots of ancient mythology are actually a very real, accurate, and sophisticated cosmology — a record of the heavens. They identified ancient references to a “quadrangular Earth” with four corners or pillars as a coded picture of “the ideal plane going through the four points of the year, the equinoxes and the solstices,” which was “by no means ‘believed’ to be quadrangular by ‘primitive’ Chinese, and so on….” (pg 62) It is the ecliptic, and they complain about the repeated necessity to explain “what this ‘earth’ is that modern interpreters like to take for a pancake.” (pg 235)

The Hamlet’s Mill authors also note a Finnish folktale that “repeats the well-known Babylonian story of Etana and the Eagle,” with analogous similes that depict the Earth as “‘no bigger than a pea.'” (pg 114) A pea is certainly a sphere.

The point here is the vast amount of evidence available to show that “ancient” man was highly intelligent and skilled, whether or not one believes that the biblical record is accurate history. [We believe the Bible is revealed Truth; Hamlet’s Mill authors do not.] Elsewhere, we will address the question of whether the Bible supposedly teaches a “flat Earth.” What do you think?

Are Egyptian Antiquities Safe?

Posted By on February 2, 2011

The world holds its collective breath as politically seismic events erupt in Egypt, home to some of history’s most unique and valuable antiquities, including the Great Pyramid complex. Looters have already damaged important antiquities in the Egyptian Museum in Cairo.

According to Global Post, the army is now securing museums and the main pyramids. See http://www.globalpost.com/dispatch/egypt/110201/egypt-artifacts-historic-sites.

TCFB has observed various comments on the Web expressing concern for the pyramids and Great Sphinx from two sources — not just looters/defacers, but also the possibility of consequences resulting from a takeover by religious extremists such as those in Iran, who might determine the great antiquities to be idolatrous. See Ynet News at http://www.ynetnews.com/Ext/Comp/ArticleLayout/CdaArticlePrintPreview/1,2506,L-4020695,00.html to read that “Iranian leaders hope for Islamic republic in Egypt.”

Egypt is also home to the Suez Canal, a guardian of the Red Sea shipping lanes, one of two Middle East neighbors honoring a peace treaty with Israel (the other being Jordan), an ally of the United States, possessor of a formidable army and lots of firepower, and a major player in Middle Eastern affairs.

Egypt is also about 10% Christian, with its rich, millennia-old Coptic Church, as well as a few other active denominations.

Be sure and go to Joel Rosenberg’s blog at http://flashtrafficblog.wordpress.com/ [Inside the Revolution] to read about the following:

…senior White House and State Department officials are inexplicably indicating that they are now interested in welcoming the Muslim Brotherhood and other “non-secular” groups into whatever new government is created once Hosni Mubarak leaves office, as he has indicated he is now willing to do….Few moves could be more disastrous. Does the administration not understand who they are dealing with?

Who is Mohamed Elbaradei? A wolf in sheep’s clothing…an apologist for Iran (Shia) and the Muslim Brotherhood (Sunni) and anti-Israel.

Living Link to Ancient Polynesian Navigation

Posted By on January 26, 2011

Kimokeo is his name. It’s the Hawaiian version of Timothy (Timoteo), as many Hawaiians were christened with biblical names. Members of the Kihei Canoe Club on Sugar Beach in Maui call him a “living legend.” He was part of a team that paddled the length of the Hawaiian archipelago. He speaks the language, carries the knowledge of his seafaring people, and delights in instructing club members, tourists, and young Hawaiians in the techniques and traditions of the outrigger canoe.

He’s a paddler, not a sailor, he says, as his uncle and grandfather were. The great Thor Heyerdahl came to see Kimokeo’s uncle in Tahiti in 1976 to research the Polynesian sailing canoes and knowledge of navigation. This post includes a picture (below) we took in Lahaina, Maui, of a small version of an ocean-going sailing canoe.

Who was Thor Heyerdahl? In 1947, Heyerdahl shocked the Western world when his Kon-Tiki balsa raft managed 4,300 miles of the Pacific Ocean from Peru to an atoll near Tahiti. Such a “stunt” was supposed to be impossible and “crazy.” Then his second Ra reed boat successfully navigated 3,270 miles of the Atlantic Ocean from Morocco to Barbados in 57 days in 1970. [The first almost made it in 1969.] Following his visit with Kimokeo’s uncle, Heyerdahl went on to successfully complete another reed boat trip from Mesopotamia to Africa — 4200 miles — in 1977.

The point of these “crazy stunts”? To defy the “conventional expert” viewpoint that the oceans had always been barriers and that only “modern” people with “new technology” could navigate from continent to continent, or distant island to distant island. The “ancients,” whether Polynesian or Phoenician, were quite skilled and knowledgeable, and capable of crossing oceans at will — the evidence is there, as we talked about in the 1994 publication of They Came From Babel.

The week following Thanksgiving 2010, Kimokeo drew my attention to a boat in Maalaea Bay as we stood on Sugar Beach in Maui. “Straight south of that boat is Tahiti,” he pointed. Then he started back to the southeast and pointed out the exact directions of a whole list of well-known, faraway South Pacific islands. The best navigation, he said, is in the morning as it goes from dark to light. The skilled Polynesian navigators drew on a number of “tools,” including the stars, the Sun, the currents, the winds, the birds, and the fish.

The Kihei outrigger canoe club is a recreational as well as a racing club. It’s mission is to perpetuate Hawaiian traditions, especially through its educational and competitive youth program. It reaches out to any Maui resident and welcomes guests (including us tourists) two mornings a week.

What a thrill it was to paddle in sync with a canoe crew across the glassy morning waters of Maalaea Bay, while listening to Hawaiian traditions, in mixed Hawaiian and English, from a living link to ancient Polynesian ocean navigation.

Which Is the Great Pyramid?

Posted By on August 14, 2010

In surfing stock photo sites for the Giza pyramids, I noticed that quite a number of people were confused about which pyramid is the Great Pyramid. The remarkable Giza Plateau features three large pyramids and six small pyramids, as well as the Great Sphinx and various other structures. Many people see the Second Pyramid with a portion of its original limestone coating on the top, sitting on higher ground, and conclude that it must be the Great Pyramid. They are wrong.

The Second Pyramid, often seen looming in the distance in photos taken showing the face of the Sphinx, is associated with Pharaoh Khafre (Chephren in Greek), said to have reigned c. 2520-2494 BC, whose face is supposed to be the one we see now on the Sphinx. Because it sits on higher ground, and retains the coating around the capstone, the Second Pyramid looks taller from certain angles at a distance, but it is not. It is called “Second” for good reason.

According to conventional, nationalistic Egyptology, the Great Pyramid is associated with Pharaoh Khufu (Cheops in Greek), said to have reigned c. 2551-2528 BC. It looms behind the Sphinx only in a side-angle shot.

The Great Pyramid has been looted of its once magnificent, polished, gleaming limestone surface. You can now find much of it in the buildings of Cairo. It sports a “flat top.” Its missing capstone is the subject of some fascinating speculation, including a string of biblical references [Ps. 118:22; Matt. 21:42; Acts 4:11; I Pet 2:7], referring to the stone which the builders rejected which became the head of the corner (chief cornerstone). Intriguing? That’s just the tip of the pyramid.

Quoting Robert M. Schoch, Ph.D. in Pyramid Quest, the Great Pyramid is the largest stone building ever erected, but its incredibly sophisticated construction incorporates details that have boggled great minds for many centuries. It is called Great for very good reason. It is absolutely unique and raises many head-scratching questions.

It is understandable that casual tourists might get the pyramids confused. However, the video editors of the History Channel series Ancient Aliens repeatedly show the Second Pyramid while the narrator speaks of the Great Pyramid. Though that’s a bit disconcerting, the documentary provides fantastic visuals and some great information on a broad range of evidences for ancient intelligence, much (not all) of which we at TCFB find very valuable from a biblical and historical standpoint.

So, if you didn’t before, you now know which pyramid is which, and that puts you light-years ahead of a lot of people.

Evolution, Meat, and “Brains”

Posted By on August 2, 2010

An ancient diet change from vegetarian to carnivore made the “human” brain grow and kicked humanity into high gear, argues Leslie Aiello, anthropologist and director of New York’s Wenner-Gren Foundation. According to Aiello, a human cannot have a big gut (necessary for raw veg diet) and a big brain at the same time, as raw food demands more work to digest and hogs energy, depriving the brain. The change is estimated to have occurred 2.3 million years ago.

One of the premises of TCFB is that we take the Judeo-Christian Scriptures seriously. So, what does Genesis have to say about this? It says that Adam and his progeny were quite intelligent and capable from the very beginning, but that their diet was indeed vegetarian in the pre-Flood time period. Certainly in Eden, and even afterward, the quality of food and the vitality of man were much greater. We’re not certain exactly what all Adam, Eve, and kids ate, other than their diet excluded meat. We quibble with the classic evolutionist estimate of 2+ million years, but we find it interesting that they agree with the biblical report that man went, rather suddenly, from only “veg” to both meat and “veg.”

This subject is discussed in an article published today by NPR.org (Food for Thought: Meat-Based Diet Made Us Smarter, Christopher Joyce, 8/2/10). The article also proposes that meat led to “more brains” which led to tools. Tools, say the anthropologists, created better digestion and thus more energy for the brain. What does Genesis say about that? Cain, the very first procreated human, went right to farming, and since he later went right out and built a city, he probably had some tools. It wasn’t long before his progeny were working in bronze and iron. There is definite disagreement in the two viewpoints.

Another anthropologist, Richard Wrangham of Harvard, believes that cooking (another result of a bigger brain) is the “real secret to being human” because it makes both meat and “veg” more digestible, though he remains a vegetarian. From our research, we would contend that Adam and his gang were quite knowledgeable and that fire and cooking did not need to be “discovered,” though it may not have been necessary until after the Great Flood, when meat was introduced into man’s diet, by God Himself.

Fast-forwarding to our modern world, we support the well-documented argument that both meat and “veg” are necessary in this post-Flood world to provide the “good fats” and the B vitamins, etc., that are vital to good nutrition. In fact, high-quality meat (especially grass-fed) is an important source of the good fats that our fatty brains must have to remain healthy. See TCFB and our sister HAYC websites for more information on these subjects, ancient and modern.

Sphinx Head Recarved — I Knew It!

Posted By on August 2, 2010

After skimming a little of the internet, I realize that I am not the only non-professional observer to look at the massive lion body of the Great Sphinx and conclude that the “puny” little “pharaonic” head does not match.

Egyptologists have clung to the conventional, nationalistic view that the head of the Sphinx is that of Pharaoh Khafre (or in Greek Kephren or even Chephren) who reigned 2520-2494 BC of the Fourth Dynasty, and who is connected to the “Second Pyramid” of the Giza Plateau. Khafre is listed as second following Khufu (Cheops) who is connected with the Great Pyramid.

In our original research for TCFB, we concluded that the traditional outline of Egyptian history is faulty, that many older representations of the damaged Sphinx head were female, and that some researchers, including British astronomer Sir Norman Lockyer, believed the Great Sphinx to originally portray the female head of Virgo (representing the Virgin Mary) on the lion body of Leo (representing Jesus, the Lion of Judah). According to that viewpoint, the circular Zodiac begins with Virgo and ends with Leo. We will blog and write in much more detail concerning these subjects.

We knew that researcher John Anthony West believed that the Great Sphinx is much older than the traditional dating, and that he suspected weathering on the body by water, and not just wind and sand. For us, that revived an intriguing question of our own: Was the Sphinx carved after, or before, Noah’s Flood? And, yes, after decades of research, we are firm believers that the evidence for a worldwide flood is undeniable.

West convinced Robert M. Schoch, a student of ancient history and a member of the science faculty at Boston University, with a doctorate in geology and geophysics from Yale, to analyze the possibility of water erosion of the Sphinx. Schoch was skeptical. However, after three trips to Egypt, detailed research, and a seismic study, Schoch came to the following conclusion:

The oldest portions of the Sphinx were originally carved not in the reign of Khafre, circa 2500 B.C., but much earlier, somewhere between approximately 5000 and 7000 B.C., according to my best estimates. Since then, the original Sphinx has been heavily repaired and restored, both in ancient and modern times, and the pharaonic head is a recarving of an earlier one.

Schoch’s book was published in 2005, but we just recently purchased it as we dig back into our own research. We might disagree with his dating estimates, but we are inclined to agree with his conclusion about the water and the recarving of the head!

Alternative Ancient History

Posted By on July 30, 2010

They Came From Babel was originally a 244-page book we published in 1994 which presented an unconventional view of ancient man as physically superior, mentally sophisticated, and capable of accomplishments far beyond anything most of us have ever imagined. It introduced some of the patriarchs and pagans who established the thoughts and cultures of mankind, and whose influence still shapes our world today.

The book included research regarding ancient geography, ancient calendars, ancient navigation, and the basic history behind world mythology and the “Mystery System.” We delved into some controversial topics such as Egyptian history, the pyramids (in particular the Great Pyramid), and Tychonian vs. Copernican astronomy. We even looked into classical and quantum physics.

They Came From Babel was originally intended to be the first volume of a “Biblical History of the Americas.” We had discovered a growing number of what we call “maverick” secular researchers who continue to unintentionally lend support to the biblical record of ancient intelligence and the dispersion from “Babel.” These archaeoastronomers and cultural and archaeological diffusionists offer fascinating insights and discoveries when viewed through a “biblical lens.”

Our original publication was the culmination of several decades of interest, and a few years of pre-internet research done the old-fashioned way — interlibrary loan. Even in today’s marvelous internet world, a good research librarian is worth a mammoth’s weight in gold!

Now, They Came From Babel will continue as a website-based blog featuring e-books (and eventually print versions) concerning an even broader range of topics centering around a biblical view of ancient history. It is part of the family of Health Around Your Corner Publications.
